Evening gentlemen,
I have a concern. I have one crystal-synched Beaulieu 4008 and two nicad batteries. My batteries, when fully charged, can shoot roughly seven rolls of film before running out of the juice required to maintain synch. It takes about ten hours, I believe, to fully charge one battery. So, is there no way that I can go on a shoot, as I did today, with two charged batteries? I shot a couple rolls of silent (filming some chess games) over a period of an hour or so but found the battery to have too low of a charge to shoot synch when the time came to do an interview. Obviously I cannot charge one battery, which I have to do through the camera body, for ten hours, set it aside then charge the other one for the same amount of time and expect the first to have a good charge when shooting starts. Will I need to buy a cheap Beaulieu body with a wall plug-in to be able to have two good batteries at one time? I appreciate all information.
humbly yours,

Well, first off, you can go ahead and charge one battery for 10 hours and then charge the next one and the first should be fine, assuming that your batteries are good and holding a charge. In fact, you should be able to charge a battery and use quite some time later. If it loses its charge over a few days, then there is definately something wrong with the battery and it should be replaced.
As far as charging two at once, it can be done but you will need a charger with twice the value or the present charger twice the time. Unfortunately, the math simply dicatates how things go for this sort of affair. One thing is to look at the type of battery you are celled with. Typical nickel-cadium batteries are not as efficient as newer nickel-hydride batteries or zinc based cells. The latter will hold twice the amp-hours that Nicads will and take no longer to charge. So you might consider re-celling your battery, if that's possible. Also, you could use an external power supply consisting of a gel cel, which would let you shoot for days on a single over night charge. Gel-cels are cheap, cheap, cheap, too. What is the voltage required for your camera?

I have two batteries. One says "7,2V/600Ma CHARGE 5H/100Ma" and the other "7,2V/800Ma CHARGE 12H/60Ma." I'm not, however, too sure what any of that means. I guess I should have known that my batteries would hold a charge for awhile, but I have much to learn. I'm going to continue filming in Tompkins Square Park for for some time. I'm doing a documentary-type thing on the chess scene there. I'll film for awhile and will eventually send all the rolls to you for transfer Roger, but I'll give you fair notice before. Thanks for the information.
